Bonzai Burger

Maya walked merrily down the street, and headed towards the Wright Anything Agency. Apollo said he'd meet her outside to take her to the local Burger eating contest. Humming a tune, she saw Apollo with his back to her. Taking this opportunity, she snuck up behind him and jumped onto his back.

"Boo! Hi Polly! You ready? You promised you'd take me out today! You better not have forgotten." She tugged on his shirt with a grin across her face, becoming impatient and excited at the same time.

Apollo was actually expecting someone other than Maya at the time. Apollo was told by one of the local Detectives that there was a burger-eating contest today. What was his name again? Gumboot? Something or other. So when he felt something press up against his shoulder, images of the good detective crushing Apollo under his bodyweight for some reason came to his mind.

"Gumboot nooooo" Apollo shouted as he felt the pressure increasing. But oddly, it stopped. Had the detective lost a good hundred pounds since they last saw each other? Couldn't be. Apollo soon felt a tugging on his collar, which led him to look over at to see it was actually Maya who had greeted him. "Oh! Hey Maya!" He cheerfully greeted her, glad he wasn't a human pancake. "Detective Gumboot told me all about this place."

"Hm? Did he?" She smiled. "And I think you mean Gumshoe, Polly. His name is Detective Gumshoe." Maya giggled a little. "Are you going to take part or watch Polly? I think you should take part. Burgers are nice ya' know."

She looked around, keeping an eye out for the Detecives. I wonder if he'll make it in time... usually he's late with these things.

"Me? Participate? No way." Apollo knew better than to do that to his throat. It was bad enough he had to to through his Chords of Steel every morning, but jamming burgers down was too much. "Actually, I don't even know how the detective is entering. Don't you remember? It's a fifty dollar entry fee."

Apollo stood proudly as he had successfully explained the situation to his friend. Many checks were being processed in his mind. All to make sure he didn't leave anything out. He swallowed his fear before looking over to Maya. "I...did tell you about the fee, didn't I?"

Maya looked at Apollo and thought. "U-Um... I don't think so..." Her face dropped. "Ah well, I'm sure I can try and enter for free!" Maya smiled and spin around on the spot and then stopped.

"I wonder how long Gumshoe will be." She looked around again, standing on her tiptoes to see through the small crowds around them.
