Not Alone

Phoenix sat at his desk, reviewing his most recent case. He sighed heavily, wondering how he was going to get his client proven not guilty this time. He doubted his usual method of shifting the blame onto someone he hated was going to work this time. He scanned over his evidence once more, trying to compose a decent argument in his head.

Miles sat at his desk, bored with the lack of work he needed to do. He already had a seemingly flawless prosecution lined up so why bother doing other work? 'Screw it, I'm calling someone.' He picked up his cell phone and randomly scrolled up and down the contact list and dialed the number it landed on: Phoenix Wright.

Phoenix was startled when his phone started ringing the Steel Samurai theme song. He was even more puzzled when he saw the name on the caller ID: Miles Edgeworth. He frowned, trying to figure out why Edgeworth would be calling him.

"Hello?" Phoenix tried his best to keep his confusion out of his voice.

"Hello, Wright. It's Miles. I'll make this brief. I'm bored as hell and no one else picked up their phone." Miles started to draw a picture of a small flower in the top corner of a piece of stationary. "Wanna do something later?"

"Um, like what?" Phoenix was even more confused. "Want Larry to tag along? It could be like old times, you know?" He was absentmindedly doodling on his notepad. 'Does Edgeworth have no other friends?' Phoenix thought confusedly. "Where do you wanna meet up?"

"He can or he can't. It doesn't matter to me because I just need SOMETHING to do." Miles put his pen under his nose. "And maybe the mall? Again, I just want to do something so I really don't care."

"Alright, when do you wanna meet up?" Phoenix looked through his window to his bike, wondering if he could bike that far on his old bike without it falling apart. "And, um, this isn't to lull me into a false sense of security in order to get me to leak information about my defense strategy, is it?"

"Wright, my side of the case is already fool-proof. Don't think that I need to get information from you." Miles leaned back into his chair. "And I was thinking around 4?"

"Sure, sounds good," Phoenix responded, wondering why Edgeworth didn't ask someone like Gumshoe or Damon Gant, the police chief. "I'll see you then, Edgeworth." He hung up and began again on his case, frowning at his evidence. 'Of course he would have a flawless case, while I grasp at straws,' he sighed inwardly.

Miles put down his phone and began working on his doodle again, adding some grass and a puppy dog sniffing the flower. He had a small smile on his face before he realized what he had just done. 'Did... did I just ask Phoenix to do something...? WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST DO?!'

Phoenix continued to work on his case, still slightly confused. He had never been out with Edgeworth outside of a courtroom, and was worried. He wondered what exactly he just got himself into.

West River Mall

Miles parked near the main entrance of the large shopping center. He got out of his red sports car and looked around. No sign of Phoenix. 'Give him a few minutes. It's not time yet. WAIT WHY AM I WORRIED HE'S NOT GOING TO SHOW UP.' He shook the thoughts from his head and made his way into the building.

Phoenix had begun to ride his bike to the mall just before half past three, and realized he was going to be precisely on time. He arrived at the mall's bike holder and locked his bike in, making sure it was in correctly. Assured his bike wouldn't be stolen, Phoenix went into the mall, and looked around for Edgeworth.

Miles was window shopping in the beginning part of the mall, looking at objects he would never think of buying. He turned his attention to the entrance way and saw his guest looking around.

'He... actually showed up?' The prosecutor felt his face flush slightly at the sight of his rival. He shook his head in an attempt to quell the blush as he walked towards Phoenix.

Phoenix spotted Edgeworth walking towards him and smiled. 'He's actually here? I kind of thought he was going to stand me up and laugh.' He walked up to Edgeworth and met him halfway. "Hey, Edgeworth."

"Hello, Wright." Miles returned the smile, albeit with a small smirk. "So... How have you been?"

"Alright, can't complain, really," Phoenix answered, not letting Edgeworth see how stressed he was about the upcoming trial. "How about you, Edgeworth?"

"Same. Spending countless hours in the office doing nothing because all the work is child's play really tires the mind." Miles sighed and looked down the hallway at the many different genres of stores.

"Sure, Mr. Genius Prosecutor," Phoenix shrugged. "Is it really that easy for you, pointing fingers at innocent people?"

Miles turned and glared at Phoenix. "Mr. Wright. Prosecutors try as hard, if not harder, as Defense Attorneys to find the truth. We work at the defendant being guilty, you work on them being innocent. My current cases have the evidence pointing directly beyond a shadow of a doubt at their defendants so I didn't have much work to do."

His look softened as he ran a hand through his hair. "I'm sorry... I'm a little bit stir crazy."

"Does it really point beyond a shadow of a doubt?" Phoenix inquired. "'Cause I seem to find flaws in your perfect evidence..." He stopped, and blushed slightly. "But are we here to argue or hang out?"

"Right. Hang out. This is a time to get away from work and have some fun." Miles laughed a bit, remembering that he wasn't in a courtroom anymore.

"So...um, what do you do for fun?" Phoenix asked, finding it difficult to imagine Edgeworth having fun."Deduct from Gumshoe's salary every time he makes a mistake?" he teased.

"Do you really think I'm that heartless and evil?" Miles looked insulted and turned to walk away. "It's only every other time!" He ribbed back and started to walk towards the food court.

Phoenix followed him. "Ha, you CAN take a joke!" he chuckled, keeping pace with Edgeworth. "And here I thought you were soulless."
