An Average Day At Work

"Just relax, Miles... You're probably over thinking this whole thing..." Miles said to himself as he tried to think of a way to explain the broken door to the authorities. A faint whimpering caught his ears and he turned around and was staring at Phoenix's closet door. "Phoenix?" He asked while inching towards the door. "You in there?"

Phoenix whimpered more, and curled up tighter, willing himself to disappear. This was it. Edgeworth was going to end it. He tried to steel himself for it, and curled up even tighter, if that was possible. He knew Edgeworth was just looking for him to tell him that he was running far away with Mia. Phoenix screwed his eyes up, not letting any more tears fall.

"I'll take that as a yes..." Miles reached out to the door and slowly opened it. "Phoenix?" He asked, to what he could only decipher as a whimpering pile of goo.

Phoenix drew away from the voice, sniffling as he tried to stop his tears. His shoes were off, probably strewn somewhere in the living room, and he was no longer wearing his blue suit jacket, having discarded it in the bedroom. He was in just a white shirt, and undershirt, his tie, and pants. His spikes were even more disheveled than usual, and Phoenix couldn't find his voice, even if he wanted to speak.

"Phoenix?" Miles knelt down to attempt to console the upset man. "What happened? I thought you had died!"

"What does it matter?" Phoenix's voice was muffled, his face still hidden. "You're going to run off with Mia!"

"What? Why would you... Oh my god..." Miles realized that his planning with Mia had been taken in the worst way possible. "Phoenix, I am so sorry! That has NEVER been my intention! That couldn't be further from the truth!"

Phoenix just curled up more, letting his tears fall freely now. "It's true! You and Chief are going to elope and get married, and I'll be here, all alone...with Courier Boy!"

"Why in the world would I want to marry Ms. Fey? I already have the most wonderful boyfriend in the world." Miles sat down and put a hand on Phoenix's shoulder, trying to reassure him that he wasn't going anywhere.

Phoenix let out a sob, and threw himself into Edgeworth's arms. "D-do you mean it?" He sniffled sadly, tears still falling down his cheeks.

"Absolutely." Miles answered, hugging the crying man. "I can promise you that I won't go anywhere. And that's something I'd gladly stake my law licence on."

Phoenix looked up at his boyfriend, his face pale and tear stained. "Miles...am I good for anything?" He worried, remembering Dahlia's cruel words.

"Let's see... you're great company, you make me laugh, you are a wonderful kisser... Smart, cute, assertive when need be, a phenomenal defense attorney... Need I say more?" Miles lightly kissed Phoenix's forehead.

Phoenix smiled at Edgeworth, finally calmed down. "I love you, Miles, thank you for coming to find me," he snuggled into his chest. "You're the best boyfriend ever."

"No problem. It's what good boyfriends are supposed to do, right?" Miles thought for a moment, then his face dropped. "Oh, um... when I came over I... Kind of..." He trailed off.

"What?" Phoenix looked at Miles curiously. "What did you do? Is it something bad? Is it a surprise?"

"Well, it might be a surprise... But when you didn't answer the door I..." Miles got an embarrassed blush on his face. "I sort of thought you died and... broke your door down to get in..."

"You did what?!" Phoenix wasn't sure whether to be upset, or moved. "Miles...you're paying for that...how badly is it broken?" He was almost too afraid to ask, but gathered up all his courage.

"I... er... Didn't bother to check. And I would have paid for it regardless. Should we go check?" Miles gestured towards the front door.

Phoenix nodded fearfully. "Miles...don't you have my key...?" He took Miles' hand as they headed towards the front door.

"Well, yes, but all I remember is thinking that you were dead or dying and then I had broken your door." The pair reached the door and Miles examined it more closely. "It looks like I broke the lock and pulled the door hinges out of the wall... So... the only thing that DOESN'T need to be replaced is the door itself."

"Great," Phoenix looked at his damaged door. "Do you act like a macho man often, and have just been trying to pass yourself off as a proper gentleman?" He teased, and kissed Mile's cheek.

"I will let you know that I am the utmost gentleman! But when worried about one's mate, a gentleman forgoes his gentlemanly ways to protect. Besides, watching rugby gets me a little bit pumped." Miles looked at what remained of the door jamb. "But I guess I didn't know my own strength..!"

"I think it's hot that you wanted to protect me," Phoenix whispered in his ear, smirking. "And I apologize for being a basket case...I should've trusted you and Mia..."

"I... it... what..?" Miles stumbled over his words, a bit flustered at the sudden flirtatiousness of his boyfriend. "Right! So what do you propose we do about the door? I don't want to leave you here with a broken door all by yourself!"
